One exception is for students who take higher mother tongue; they have to write their O level for normal mother tongue at the secondary 3 level. As you can see, there is a number next to the grade and this number signifies the points that the student receives for the subject. The higher the points, the worse the performance in the subject. Among the subjects that the student took, 1 language and 5 other subjects will be chosen so that the student is able to receive the lowest cumulative point possible.
Moreover, if the student took the Higher mother tongue, 2 points will be reduced from the total. Similarly, depending on the CIP hours and commitment that the student had to his or her CCA, further 1 or 2 points will be reduced from the total. The minimum score possible to achieve is an A1 for everything with a 4-point reduction resulting in a total of 2 points. Using the points that students achieved, they can apply for different junior colleges or polytechnics to proceed with their further studies, if necessary.
A level examination, as mentioned, is written at the end of their junior college journey. One exception is for students who take normal mother tongue; they have to write their normal mother tongue A level examinations in their first year of Junior college. The method of teaching as well as learning also varies amongst the two systems. Rather, the main objective is to ensure that the students understand what they read, for which they are tested in a way where not only the bookish knowledge is implied, but the students analyze the situation using their personal opinions.
Thus the exam only requires students to re-produce what they have memorized. Sadly, our education system has massive loopholes and one example of that is that the education system being followed in the institution determines its quality. What is even more disheartening is that the top private schools of Pakistan, have all opened a subsidiary to cater the low and middle-income group as well as pro matriculation and intermediate audiences, and their dual standards are exposed when they offer top-notch services to their flagship project students whereas the students at their subsidiaries are not given the same treatment.
This signifies how education has become a business in our society where schools operate as private profit-making enterprises and compete with each other to earn the highest profits.
I believe that despite the education system being followed, the standard of education must be the same across the board. The purpose of this article is not to mock our local education system but is a wakeup call to the authorities. O-Level and A-Levels are the British educational style adopted by Pakistan from international countries.
Both are General Education Certificates. O-Level stands for an Ordinary level or education which is completed in three years while A-Level stands for the Advance level of education and completed in 2 years. There is also a huge difference between the subjects and curriculum in both two academic disciplines adopted from British style of the education system.
