His comments about banning contraception and pornography from Ave Maria brought threats from the American Civil Liberties Union of a lawsuit if he tried to impose his personal morality on the town government. Unlike in Michigan, where he reportedly micromanaged his academic holdings through surrogates, Monaghan appointed himself chancellor of Ave Maria University despite his lack of any academic credentials.
After several years holding classes in temporary quarters in Naples, the university moved to its gleaming new permanent campus adjacent to the eponymous town in The law school relocated to Naples that same year. Unfortunately, the slumping real estate market and financial meltdown delayed the development substantially, and reports of slow home sales and other financial problems with the development have surfaced afterward.

Pleasant, Michigan, catering to college studentds. Working hour days and visiting more than rival pizzerias, Monaghan utilized the best techniques and invented his own when none existed to stay in the forefront of the industry. In , he sold his first franchise.
As the business continued to grow, Monaghan had to face a number of challenges. In , a fire destroyed his anchor store in Ypsilanti, which supplied the other stores with food, as well as the company's offices.
Most of the damage was not covered by insurance. Monaghan turned the company over to Ken Heavlin, a local businessman on May 1, , to avoid bankruptcy. Within a year he regained control and by Domino's had recovered. In September , Amstar Corporation, the manufacturer of Domino Sugar, sued for infringement of trademark.
That lawsuit continued until when a federal Court of Appeals judge ruled that the name Domino's Pizza was unlikely to be confused with Domino Sugar. As Monaghan became distracted by other interests, his company began a gradual decline. In , he was forced to to sell some of his prized possessions and focus more attention on his business in order to return it to profitability. As a result, the company decided to give up its guarantee of "delivery in thirty minutes or the pizza is free.
He also faced opposition from various gay rights groups because of his support of the Catholic Church's position on homosexuality. At the time, though, he did not have the necessary discipline and was expelled from the seminary.
He gained a better sense of discipline by serving three years in the U. Marine Corps. Upon his discharge in , Monaghan returned to Ann Arbor and enrolled in the nearby University of Michigan. He studied to become an architect, inspired by the work of Frank Lloyd Wright. Within a year, Tom bought out his brother's share for a Volkswagen Beetle. The stores were losing money, but with his experience in the college town, Tom Monaghan knew how to, literally, cater to them.
He dropped sandwiches from the menu and focused on making and delivering pizzas. He invented an insulated box that would not only keep the pizza warm but also support the weight of multiple boxes on top of it. The modern-day pizza delivery service was born.
